Holy Week Roundup

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Busy week for 'Stangs as spring season hits high gear.

If Mullen girls soccer ultimately turns into a major factor in Class 4A in late May, the past Thursday’s victory may be a pivotal reference point.

The Mustangs rallied from a two goal deficit to take down Cherry Creek 4-3 at the Stutler Bowl in Greenwood Village.

The victory in the Centennial League opener pushed Mullen, which was ranked No. 2 in Class 4A and has since moved to No. 1, to 5-0-1 overall.

Cherry Creek was ranked No.10 in 5A and the Mustangs had been 0-7-1 against the Bruins since 2014.

“More than anything,” Mustangs head coach Matt Degitis said, “we fought hard for the win and lived under the pressure.”

Better yet, keeper Liv Incitti was ready for this particular match and especially this particular foe. The Bruins may have peppered her with a series of high-end shots, but she practically was a wall and certainly kept the Mustangs in the match early, when Cherry Creek seemed to be going for a quick kill.

“I was kind of expecting that from Creek,” she said. “(The Bruins) always come out like that, I was really ready this year. I’ve been training hard for this game.”

Offensively, Kate Vezzani and Anna Johnson got Mullen’s first two scores, and the third one that tied it, a 40-yard-plus free kick that bounced perfectly in front of the Bruins keeper and over her head into the goal, was a thing of beauty.

Vezzani, a junior who has committed to Wisconsin, also set up the game-winner, the team’s only corner kick that was finished by Ella Grace in the 68th minute.

“We’ve been practicing that one for a while,” Vezzani said.

Mullen will resume action on the pitch on Thursday, April 13, at Smoky Hill in Aurora in league, 4:15 p.m.

The left fielder drove home six runs on a grand slam and two-run double in a 9-0 nonleague victory at Class 5A Brighton in nonleague.

The 4A Mustangs moved to 5-4.

Jackson’s six RBIs and six total bases topped a 10-hit attack that also included eight singles, three by catcher Ben Krza. Colin Mackenzie had two hits as well as the team’s other RBI.

On the mound, Thomas Stewart was as thorough as he was dominant – the junior right-hander went the distance and tossed a five-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and just one walk.

Centennial League play will begin for Mullen on Tuesday, April 11, at Overland in Aurora, first pitch at 4:15 p.m.
